Insteadof threading the freewheel onto the hub, the engagement device is built directly into the hub. Then you just screw on different metal rings with teeth to act as freewheels. You can run low ratios (25-9) and there's instant engagement

there's instant engagement
no there isn't.

unless it is a shimano lx silent clutch hub for a bmx.

no hubs are instant engagement.

better hubs have more engagements which gives quicker engagement, but not instant.

By all human concerns, it's instant. Especially when compared to a freewheel.

is it ****.

most freewheels have 20 engagement points.

cassette hubs such as profile have 48 engagements. there are similar amounts of points in demolition, odyssey and primo.

even chris king hubs, which have 72 engagements aren't instant engagement.

the only way you can have an instant engagement hub is by having a silent clutch hub such as the shimano lx silent clutch.

it uses a taper/bearing system where the bearings wedge ito tapers immediately upon pressure to the cranks.

ratchet/pawl hubs like freewheels and conventional cassettes cannot be instant engagement.

no.

it is possible to make one that has a very small amount of movement between engagements to make it feel almost instant, but in order to do this you have to have more engagements in the hub. this means smaller engagements and smaller pawls, which also means weaker parts.

an in between needs to be reached between size/weight/engagements and strength.

not many nore improvements can be made now using the current systems in hubs.

any major improvements from now on will involve radical ways of engageing a hub. Chris King use a patented engaging mechanism, but it is still to expensive for the vast majority of the world.
