A casette is a hub and freewheel in one. Basicly you use it to run smaller gearing so you don't bottom out over hips and stuff. They last longer and you can rebuild them but they are ALOT more expensive than freewheels.

Most lower end bikes come with freewheels

A freewheel is the more simple of the hubs, which has a seperate driver that threads onto the outside. A cassette has more complicated, having a driver that goes into the hub itself. It uses a simple ratchet system to move. Just because a bike has a freewheel doesnt make it bad, Id rather a freewheel over a cassette any day.

cassettes are way better, and will last a hell of a lot longer and for the most part are low maintenence.

a freewheel threads onto the outside of the casing of the hub and a cassette threads on the axle

Cassette hubs are way better than freewheels because it allows you to run micro gearing while a freewheel only goes down to 13t.
