the bikes are often called "street and dirt bike"...so i think if you don't do the biggest jumps you can use it for dirt too :)

Ok, a 'dirt' bike is lighter, smaller dropouts and thinner tubing. A 'street' bike has huge dropouts (thick), thick tubing, grindguards (sometimes), and other ways to beef up the frame. Yes, you can use one on the other, but the 'dirt' bike would die on street before the 'street' died on dirt.

Street bikes are for street riding (park, ramp, street) while Dirt Jumping frames are really ment for soaring through the air. But you can use a different style bike for a different style of riding (tho I don't suggest taking a flatland bike onto a 70 foot half pipe :p). If you want to get into BMX'ing I highly recommend Dirt Jumping as a first style.
