Please be aware that following this guide may wreck your hub over a period of time.

Well, I have seen a lot of people posting on various forums asking how to get their cassette to tick louder so I decided to make a tutorial on how to make it louder. From personal experience I would say the Shadow Rant V2 or profile hubs are the loudest. Most people would already know this method but it is for them who don't.
Anyway
Things needed-
  • Container of some sort (butter or ice cream or something)
  • Petrol
  • Rag
  • Gloves if you have sensitive skin

Ok. First of all you take apart your cassette. You should have the axle,Driver and nuts etc. Put all of these in the petrol and slush it around a bit. The petrol acts as a degreaser and gets rid of all the grime and shit. Once you have slushed it around a bit take them out. With the rag clean the parts one by one. Make sure you put them on a clean surface to avoid getting them dirty again. Once you have cleaned all the parts put a little bit of petrol on the end of a rag and wipe it around on the inside of the hub shell. Once everything is cleaned put the cassette back together but if you want it to tick extra loud then do not grease it.

TIPS-
Do not do it on your fathers lawn as petrol kills it.
To make it easier to put the cassette back together put all the parts in order that they go back together.

Cheers.

WD40 removes grease just fine. Just gotta wipe down.

Almost ANY method of making your hub louder will damage your hub over time. It's really just pointless so don't do anything beyond removing grease.

Don't dip your driver in petrol, it'll degrease the bearings. Wipe instead. You'll want to lightly lube the pawl pits too. I'd also recommended a little on the catch ring too, just a little won't deaden the sound very much, but will prolong the life of the hub.

Some people use it to gauge speed, but it's fashion for most.

I actually cleaned my hub out and replaced the thick grease with something lighter, because as Jawn said, I use mine to judge my speed.

Grease your cog up a bit because if you degrease it completly your chain creaks like hell.
