Less spokes, 48 has more strength, 36 is lighter, 48 works for rougher, heavier people.

48 stronger heavier.
36 weaker lighter.

You can go 36 front, 48 rear if you are heavy or land a lot of big drops.

48h is only marginally heavier than 36h, but considerably stronger. if you can get a light rim with 48 spokes, it will be a lot stronger than a 36h wheel on the same rim but a slightly heavier.

I guess technically lighter hub (more holes), lighter rim (again more holes) and more spokes that add it back. If I was going wit aftermarket wheels I would run 48/36. Or maybe 48/32.
