How to – Strip, shape and recover a seat

Well I hated my seat and wanted to get a new one but couldn’t afford one at the time so I thought ill mod my existing one.

What you will need:

Seat
Stanley knife
Scissors
A fine toothed file
Adhesive spray glue
A cover u want to put on your seat
Staple gun (optional)
Gloves (optional)

This is what I used:



How to:

Firstly you will need to strip the existing cover off your seat. To do this all you need to do is remove the plastic trimming on the underneath of the seat and then remove the staples that hold the cover down. Once all the plastic trim and staples have been removed it’s a case of carefully pulling the cover off.

I didn’t get a pic at this stage unfortunately but this is a pic of the seat I started with:



Then it’s a case of taking the Stanley knife and carefully cutting strips of foam off until you get a basic shape of what you want. A sharp knife is essential as a blunt one can be more dangerous!. Take care with this stage, if you are young please get a adult to help you as knives aren’t toys.

This is how my seat looked as I started taking layers of foam off and as I gradually cut it to the rough shape of the seat I wanted:







As you can see it now has a rough shape.

Next stage is now to take the file and carefully file the rough sponge down until it’s smooth. Don’t apply too much pressure onto the file as if you press too hard it can rip chunks of sponge off so take you r time. Once it’s fully filed down it should look something like this:





Now that the foam is smooth and you are happy with the shape its time to apply the cover. For this you will need your desired cover, scissors spray adhesive and the seat:



Apply the spray adhesive to both the cover and the seat, once both seat and cover are covered let the adhesive go off for a minute of to this will help it bond better. To apply the cover on the seat its best to put the cover on the middle of the seat first then pull it tight down the sides and underneath:



When the cover is pulled tight over the sides to the bottom of the seat you will need to cut the excess off, I left around a 1.5cm lip of cloth all the way round the seat, then you will need to cut slits into the excess material, I cut slits roughly every cm round the corners and maybe every 2cm on the straight parts.

that looks real god. i just did mine a few weeks ago except i didnt do the hard part and re shape it. but this would have definetly helped

I did this to an old Mosh seat. I just didn't smooth it out. If you pull the new cover tight, the uneven parts are hard to notice or feel.

But, yes, smooth is much better.
