find a good jump and hit it allot .Start by just riding over it so as to get a feel for its size then go a little faster every time you hit it. If you stay in your cofort zone you will never push yourself so once you can get over the jump start going for more air, try throwing in tricks there is no shortage of tricks. USE PROTECTIVE GEAR you can do serious dammage to yourself if your not smart about your jumps. JUMP WITH A FRIEND if you hurt yourself its good to have someone you know there to help you out (or laugh at you) and tricks always come easyer if you got someone to ride with.
last but not least practice bunnyhops and manuels they will help with getting good air and landings!

Manuals will keep from looping out when you land on back tire and they will also just teach general bike handling skills.

Your not suppossed to land on your back tire anyway, do a nosedown or somethin, but I see what your saying. For when you DO land on your back tire, like when you hit the jump wrong or somethin. I did that back in the trails today, and i manualed about 4 feet before I lost my bike over the speed. My bike shot out from under me (luckly I landed on my feet) and bounced like 8 feet. So yea, manuels can save you, or break you.

learn off bmx-trix or just have a few tricks in mind and casually try to do smaller ones then build up

when you comfortable on jumping try to pull up more and more to get more air and try to land in a (not too steep) nosedive

and tricks always come easyer if you got someone to ride with.
