First off, dont worry about it. It takes longer for some people to learn how to hop etc. What you wanna do is watch some videos and see how the pros hop, and try to apply that to your practice.
Anyways, ive only been riding for 1.5 months but heres how i hop:
- Crouch, with left pedal foward
- Push down on the pedals, like i'm doing a jump on the ground. Whilst doing this i lift up the bars
- tuck knees
Tucking the knees is the hardest part for me, but the higher your pull up the higher your tuck. I think you are just failing on the tuck. Just grip your pedals and bent your knees towards your abdomen. GL.

Lie the dude above me so elequantly put it, some people learn different than others. Here's how I do it.
-crouch slightly with right foot forward
-pull bars up about 1-2 feet
-tuck up my knees
Now go practice and kick the **** out of your friends for using th faggy-ass term "J-Hop"!
Dude, 3-4 hours of riding. If you are dissapointed already, you get dissapointed far worse in the fututre. Manuals take long to learn. 2+ feet bunnyhops usually take long to learn as well. Other tricks often requires a decent amount of practise. So you either should not be dissapointed and keep practising, or find another, easier, kind of sport/hobby
6 years from now you will have put in so much time money and pain into this and still only be able to hop a couple feet and do a few tricks. It takes a long time to go pro like you dream of.

uhh dude. you know what i found to be REALLY REALLY helpful? dig a hole in your yard. not too big. just like 10 inches deep, a foot wide. then try hoppin over that. thats how i first hopped. i was riding through a field, tried to hop the hole, i didnt want to eat shit, so i hopped it. from doin that, i learned the motion that i gotta do, and finally got it down......hope that helps.

^^^^^^^ yep what he said.
hopping onto and over things gives you a goal to tackle, and the fear of bailing makes you hop it. Its amazing what humans can do in times of peril (sorry if that sounds a bit too philosophical, but its true). Just practice, and enough of it. One day it'll click and you'll get air.

man, dont be worried if you cant hop after 3-4 hours of riding, it took me like 3 weeks to learn even a small bunnyhop. dont be disheartened. (i used a long word :D )

im studying english in college so im expected to use long, multi-syllable words. It's even getting into the way I speak which is weird. If you ever have a conversation with me i'll suddently blurt out a complex word in the middle of a regular sentence.

I learned to bunnyhop on my BMX bike in one day but it may have helped that I could do it on my mountain bike before hand. I can only manual about 5 foot though.
