View Full Version : Building in the desert.

So, I live in New Mexico, it isn't completely sandy desert, it's more like... clay, sand, and rocks desert. It seems the only way I've managed to build jumps is to mix in some soil which I bought, with the native dirt, and then make sure to water it all the time. This is expensive, as the soil isn't exactly cheap, and there are usually rations on water, depending on the weather.
My question is, has anyone learned any tricks to building in dry environments other than what I mentioned, and lots of patience.

i would say try doing some digging really early in the morning.... like 6am. before work/school whatever. the ground seems easier to hack at then.
also try getting a pickaxe and a fork into the dirt before you get your shovel out....
i dont know how many jumps youve built before, ive not made that many myself, but i found that rather than making a jump, making a huuuuuuuge pile of dirt and leaving it to settle for a week or two before shaping it, is easier than trying to pack freshly dug dirt.
good luck dude
pray for rain, then go dig.

Oh wow, I found this great spot, the school I go to planted a bunch of trees around it, so there's water trapped in the ground, and a lot of the ground is soil. I just gotta see if the school will let me use it now.

If you build in the desert you need a constant water supply. Sprinklers all the time and hoses for making the sand wet enough to compact and build with.

true, yet our dirt jumps are so dry we are having to water them and even that dries out in an hour

there are trees around. slightly covered, but not that thick trees. the ground is sand and the jumps run along a river about 1-2 metre above, which probably helps it dry fast

i used to ride loads when i lived in berkshire and rode for like 2 years, but moved 2 years ago and have only just got into it again. i can basically do a load of 1 handed moves, no footer, nailing tables. but i prefer to go BIG!
what about you?

at the moment concentrating energy on 180 bunnyhop, but on dirt jumps stuff like x-ups tabletops, as i build them jumps up the bigger tricks i do really,
been riding since christmas so im pretty happy with how far i've come, 180 bunnyhops are annoying though, cant seem to get my back tyre off the ground n moving around,
i can normally bunnyhop easy over a foot but 180's are really weird.

Well, I've started building my first jump since I moved here, and it's slow going, since the only shovel I got is this military folding shovel, which is about the only thing I could carry down from the city on my motorcycle.

what i do is, i dig up huge dirt clumps, and stack them on eachother, then jst take some loose dirt to put on it. But i dnt know wat to tell ya, dig a big hole, fill it with water, put a tarp over it until ur gonna dig again....its wet over here in colorado alot, so theres pretty good digging down here....

I'm way down in Socorro, I go to school at New Mexico Tech. I did find this one area with decent soil, but I think I'm gonna have to find a new spot since the cops have already started bothering me. All I got so far is one jump with like a 3 foot gap, it's small, but I'm relearning everything.
