hehe, I remember when turndowns were called lookdowns.
I still call them that and people look at me funny. I always have to explain to them that it's the same thing, just 20+ years later.

This thread is great...exactly what I had in mind when I suggested it to the mods. 8)
I cannot express to you how happy I've been with my new bike. Been off for MANY years and even though I picked up a crappy Rockstar bike off Dans....it's LIGHT and with some new sticker-age looks great. I too remember the 35 lb bike....Dyno Detour with Mags. Coupled with my very skinny 13 year old frame, that sucker was a b*tch to bunny hop!
Let's see, I remember:
I remember when GT Power series or Redline Flight cranks were the sh**. It was RARE to have 3 piece cranks on your bike unless your parents were rich.
I remember seeing a Hutch or a Kuwahara in Brands bicycle shop was like looking at a foreign car...and cost as much too!
I remember 95% of pegs had treads on them....you got stuck a lot grinding with a new set.
I remember one brake meant you raced. Everyone else had two. Opening up a mag last year and seeing flatland/street with NO brakes was totally alien to me!
I remember Craig Grasso.
I remember we all had racing plates but didn't race..we just picked a random # and put punk/hardcore stickers all over it.
I remember a sticker section in the clear glass case. Skate and BMX stickers galore, $1.00 each usually.
I remember mushroom grips, all neon colors.
I remember those framestanders you'd put in front of your back pegs.
I remember when the Bully frame came out with the sporocket protector tube welded on the bottom. That thing weighed at least 10 pounds.
I remember the backflip was a big deal, not the warmup trick you do on your first run.

Speaking of Bully...

I thought those were the coolest looking frames ever.
I remember the GT Agressor with a bashguard too.
http://www.bmxmuseum.com/bikes/gt_bicycles/2914
I remember the ACS pro-rotor.
I rememeber when the only freecoaster you could get was a modified Suntour. (I still have mine!)
I rememeber Basic Silencer pegs.
I could go on for days.
And speaking of Torker, they mad an attempt at a comeback in like 96-97. I bought their three piece crank, and I still ride it to this day!!! It's CHROME!!! (Same thing as the Poverty)

Nuke Proof hubs - I still run one in the front

Gack hubs and axles. My buddy still runs one of those in the front as well.
I have a wheel with a Haro Fat Hub, even though those were more mid-school. My prized possession is my radial laced Peregrine Super Pro front wheel. I miss Peregrine Super Pros...
Anybody remeber Dia-Compe Nippon brakes, and the weird and wacky ways we used to shorten our top gyro cables? I got my ideas from Pete Brandt.

haha yes! I had meant to mention that when I mentioned the Tioga Beartrap.

I ruined 10mm axles so often, I wanted the Gack hubs so badly! But my first >10mm hub was (coincidentally) the Haro Fat hub. Problem was, the fat hub was a 3pc axle with 1/2" studs, and my frame (Hoffman Condor) had 14mm dropouts already. As you can guess, it fit like shit, all the stength of a thick dropout was gone. So I ended up breaking studs on my grind side often too, although they'd last much longer than 10mm axles.
I still have my Fat Hub wheel lying about too, it has my 12t ACS Claw freewheel on it (12t is a joke, it's a 116t with 4 teeth missing hehe).

Cool, im from Glen Head. Brands had the best selection of BMX stuff at the time. Than Bicycle Planet started getting good but waaaaay over priced. I remember i got pitchforks at Brands for $65 when even the mail orders were selling them for $80.. now the damn things are $100.

:O i used to run a old TNT warlord with threaded stem/forks, threaded pegs and a seatpole with about 4" out, 1 piece crank and plactic pedals and a 16T freewheel with a heavy ass 42T (i think it is) diamond plate sprocket and 10mm single wall rims with tire 35PSI max.

I had a similar problem with my Fat Hub, so I made custom axle bolts out of old Haro fork pegs. The thread size was the same as the hub, so you just cut off the part of the peg that you stand on and you have instant axle studs that use an 18MM socket. They didn't break, they just bent!
I remember when Dave Mirra would get into a double peg grind on vert, then put 1 foot on the front non-grinding side peg, and his other foot on the rear non-grinding side peg.

I remember when Matt Hoffman did a 360 over flaming cars on Stuntmasters. And he was on MTV Sports. I should find those videos and post them.
He did it on a PK Ripper too didn't he?
I remember when Dan's Comp was a 1 page ad in magazines.

Damn yeah you are:P jk. I wasnt old enough to see it when it came out in theaters but i saw it on VHS. I remember it and its an awesome movie. They should make more bmx movies like that or at least a newer one.
What was the song in that, i cant remember it but it was so 80s but cool.
Rad is on Google video, if you guys want to see it again:

I watched the whole of Rad earlier tonight. Some funny stuff, like quotes I never new were from the movie, the Full House chick telling Cru Jones (who is on his back after a slam) that he over-rotated ("No shit?"), Mongoose playing the corporate bad-asses and so on.

You're probably right. I remember one with SWATCH stickers for some reason. Maybe it's because I really wanted a SWATCH, with a cool neon colored Swatch Guard.
I think the first to run on the ramp after that trick was Dino DeLuca. I could be wrong though.

BMX back then was awesome. Very gimmicky for awhile, but there weren't as many trends. There were too many different styles of bikes and parts out to be trendy. It seems like everybody had something different.
My favourite period of BMX was the early 90's. It was at it's least popular, but that was good in a way, people rode cause we loved the sport. We refused to believe the hype that BMX was dead. How could BMX be dead if we still rode our bikes? We fought back, to the greater benefit of our beloved sport. That's BMX at it's most grass-roots, ladies & gentlemen.

And oddly enouhg, the early 90's is when I got into riding. I liked that it wasn't the least bit mainstream, almost like my bro, buddies, and me were the only ones in the world doing it. It was our thing. That was the time when all the gimmicky stuff had filtered out, and it was left to the true heart and soul riders. It fit me, for some reason. And I'm still doing it today!

No, it really happened, it was just a LONG time ago.
Threads about oldschool biking started way back. then they went away. Then they came back again, and everybody thought they were new and hip, when in fact they had been around before. It's just that all the new-schoolers were too young to remember.
The same holds true with tabletops, turndowns(lookdowns), tire grabs, tuck no-handers, lawnmowers, big bars, bandanas as cable ties, and landing fakie from, well, EVERYTHING.
