Just wondering what everyone uses here. I am getting a bike soon and kinda want to get a full face helmet. I feel a lot safer with a full face because the face is a pretty easy place to full on. I will be doing mostly dirt jumping. I had a full face helmet before, when I used to ride, and I got made fun of for using it while practicing at a bmx race track. The kid made fun of me because he claimed that no one wears full face helmets unless they are racing. I don't care if people make fun of me now, but I was younger then (about 4 or 5 years back) and it made me sad :(. Just wondering what everyone hear thinks about wearing full face helmets over normal helmets. Is it worth the money?

My bike got stolen so I ended up trading my old full face helmet to my cousin for his snowboard and bindings. Wasn't planning on getting back into BMX then, but I did and now I am here.

Also what do you guys think about wearing chest protectors? Do they make it harder to move your body? Will a chest protector get in the way of certain tricks? I probably won't go as far as to get a chest protector although it would be nice to have for attempting the bigger jumps.

dave mirra is one of the (and the only, that i know of) people who wears a full face helmet for everything. It's not very common cause it's bulky and "restricive" and to be honest i think it's overkill. how often do you hit your face? racers can hit there face or go over the handlebars face first whereas while dirt jumping your legs are gonna take the most damage. about the chest protector, if you get the right size the only place you might notice it is in your lower abdominals but that too is quite the overkill. another reason you might see racers, and racers only, wearing chest protectors. they don't have time to rotate and catch themselves when they're casing, they just hit hard and fast. alot of people are under the impression chest protectors are really helpful cause they're really big and cover a wide section of your body but in reality their primary function is deflecting rooster in MX, protecting your shoulders, and from hitting your chest on the handlebars.. which will probably fairly rarely happen to you during BMX dirt jumping. that said, "Is it worth the money?" well how much is your body worth? safety gear is always worth the money and if it makes you feel more confident with your riding then damnit wear every piece of protection you can get your hands on. personally, gloves, a helmet, and shin guards are the most important pieces of safety for any type of riding.. all i wear is gloves though.. occasionally shin guards

I usually don't wear any protection. If I were to be riding a skatepark with decent sized ramps then probably a helmet (No Face) and possibly knee pads.

when im riding park i either just use a shell type helmet or no protection at all, i like the free and natural feel.

as for DJ's and bmx track i use my helmet, fox elbow pads and always wear jeans or long pants and long sleeve shirt. falling and grazing yourself on dirt and gravel hurts like a mo fo.

as for the fullface if its what you want i say go for it, do you think dave mirra would care if someone told him he looks stupid?

I have been rideing a snowboard, skateboard, mtn and bmx bike for over 15 years. I support wearing a helemt no matter how good "you" think you are. I know most kids think it is not cool to wear a helmet, but you only get ONE life. A simple skate helmet is only $25 or so. Isn't your life worth more then that?

I ride with a Pro-Tec Classic white Helmet and Fox integrated Shin/Kneeguards.

The Shin/Kneeguards, because I shattered my kneecap on my right leg and if I hit it even slightly it feels like someone is driving a nail through my knee.

And the helmet because:
A:I like life.
B:I like a straight skull
C:I got a 2nd degree concussion when I wasnt wearing one.

IMO, shin pads would be most important
and then elbow pads.

other than that, not much.
you will probably hit your knees a few times but not so much
and unless your a mad man with no skill, you shouldnt be smashing your face in much, so you shouldnt need a full face.

i mean, ive been over the bars at high speeds a few times, and i just put my arms down, resulting in scabby mashed up elbows, but my face being fine.

soon as i get the money im going to get some shin pads and kneepads. But thats because i need a new helmet. Please always use a helmet we dont want you to fall of at a concrete park and break your skull open and become retarded now would we?

I ride with a Pro-Tec, but a couple of guys I ride with use full face. One is a huge hucker, the other suffered from a concussion in a car accident, and needs the extra protection. It's all your choice. THe important thing is to be safe, any helmet is better than no helmet at all.
If I were to start going huge (Big gaps, vert, stuff like that) I would probably wear a fullface. I like having teeth.

my local skatepark(rye airfield...yea thats right) makes you wear helmets, elbow and kneepads. I think its a good idea if you get comfortable pads that dont restrict movement

i currently use a helmet knee pads and shin guards. i use elbow pads when i already have swellbow or a cut on my arm. when i start doing bigger tricks later on i will buy a full face.. this is my inspiration

www.mathoffman.com

READ THE FIRST ARTICLE CALLED BRAIN DUMBAGE!! this will make you want a helmet... remember he is the best there ever was.

i'd rather be a nerd with a pulse than cool in a coma or with brain dumbage

when it's the summer time it's board shorts and shoes only (no shirt, helmet, even socks)....trails mode.

The indoor park I usually go to doesnt require a helmet. I wear a helmet maybe twice a year. I should buy a new one..then I might wear it more often.

I also refuse to go to a park that makes you wear elbow pads. There was a Van's park around here that req'd them. I would not go to it on that basis alone (and it was also $14).

i wear knee pads alway because hitting knees on stuff is like a party where everyone is painfull.

when im riding skatepark or decide to huck off of things i wear full face. i would wear no face but realy dont want to get a second helmet.

i might also get elbow pads someday but cant afford it now

I will probably get a full face later on when I start attempting bigger jumps. I already have a Normal helmet so I can use that for now. It has been like 2 years since I been jumping so I won't be hitting anything big anytime soon. If I end up buying my bike locally I am going to ask if I can get a discount on some accessories. As far as shin pads and knee pads go what are some good brands to look for? Should I stay away from the cheapest pads?

I dont wear helmet couse I dont ride park or dirt (I dont ride park couse park is pretty far from my home), I ride street and riding street you dont fall to much on your head or face. But if I would ride park or dirt I would use full head!!! Only protection I use is shin and knee pads couse I had a nasty fall on my knee, I still have few scars there! And only thing I can say to you PROTECT your self!!!

I cant tell you how many time my shin/knee pads have saved me from some major pain. I also ride with a full face. It just makes me feel better when riding. Id fell even better with elbow pads but i have no money.

I ride with shinpads and a normal skate helmet because im practising tailwhips right now and i have to wear a helmet because i got a concussion 1 week ago and if i get another i get brain damage and i want stay smart. that doesnt mean i didnt wear a helmet before though. i like life

Beanie
03-18-2007, 01:53 AM
i just use the small brainbucket skid lid type, fullface is overkill.

fulface should only be used for vert and racing, anything else and its useless.

at our park it kills us, because we cant ride it, so when we do ride in there =$50+ ticket, if we wear a helmet, the cops will know were riding in there, whereas if we dont wea r ahelmet we just sit down and they wont know. so if we do fall its not the best.

i wear a skidlid at parks though, elbow and knee pads make me feel too much like a condom, takes all the feeling and naturality out of it, feels like i have too much gear on

diamond66
03-18-2007, 02:19 AM
i just wear a fullface if im doing huge stairs or high rails, otherwise nothing.

Like beanie said, anything else feels like a condom and you cant really move

Thats the same way I feel. I used to dirt jump (2 years ago) but I never got that high because I was scared (no protection). I only went up to about 3.5 foot high jumps. This time I am going to get a bunch of gear and feel a lot safer to take some bigger jumps. I want a full face helmet, knee/shin pads, and also that foam pad that goes around the top tube.

I got a question about a full face helmet.

What is up with this design? Does it make the helmet lighter and not as bulky? Is there a reason to go with this helmet over the normal looking ones?

I can't decide between these two helmets:

Mace Hammer: The one above

OR

Azonic Fury:

The Azonic will cost me $129 and the mace hammer will cost me $100. I like the azonic better but is it worth $30 more? Just want to know what is up with the design of the mace hammer helmet.

Nothing but a set of good shoes unless I have to wear a helmet, then it's a regular skate/bmx helmet.

i ALWAYS wear shinpads as pedal pins hurt a lot hehe,i got enough holes on my shins. when i go to the local park i always wear my kneepads too as i already had two surgeries on my left knee thanks to italian most loved sport (damn soccer!). i got a pair of elbowpads and a bmx helmet too,i'm using them more and more often last times i ride, but not always

If there was a nice decent park then i would go for the full face and, knee, shin, elbow just for safety.

The protection gear I wear varies, so like this.

Combo shin/knee gaurds.
Full-face.
Full-face with combo shin/knee guards
Combo knee/shin guards with elbow/forearm guards.
Full-face with knee/shin and elbow/forearm guards.

Im thinking of a full face for trying some harder moves.Nobody can say there good enuff to not need one because crashing also involves other stuff like otha people causing you to crash or a chain breaking it could be anything you cant control.

i usually ride no protection(i know, i know) but occasionally full face(only for gnarly park stuff) cos its the only helmet i have til i get a bmx lid(which i havent gotten around to doing yet).

Um, okay... My brother would probably be dead right now if he wasn't wearing a helmet when bmxing. His helmet was compressed about 3/4 of the way in where it hit the ground. He was out like a light and a ambulance came and toke him to the hospital were he remained unconscious (after 30 min. drive). As soon as he regained consciousness he threw up all over his bed and on on the floor. I believe he spent around 2-3 days in the hospital on IV while he continued to throw up.

He over jumped a tabletop at a race track and landed on his front wheel then went over the bars and smacked into the ground with his head. The tabletop was a pretty big one around 6 feet high and had around a 15-20 foot gap. It was a really steep jump too so it would send you up there. My bro jumped got a bunch of air and then cleared the landing and landed 6 feet lower onto flat ground (front tire first). Maybe it was avoidable but my brother isn't a pro bmxer and probably didn't know how to react or maybe he thought he would land fine.

Helmets save lives and it has nothing to do with being a pussy.

i always ride with a helmet, so do most of my mates. ive never really considered riding without a helmet - its no hassle to just put one on, so you might as well.
the only senario when i wouldnt wear a helmet would be if i had a mohawk.
mohawks are cool and i wouldnt wear one becuase it would mess it up.
then i could go down to the trails with my mohawk and people would be well impressed.
but apart from that, helmet every time.
