FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - A U.S. soldier was sentenced to 100 years in prison Thursday for the gang rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and the killing of her family last year.
Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, 24, also was given a dishonorable discharge. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years under the terms of his plea agreement.
Cortez, of Barstow, Calif., pleaded guilty this week to four counts of felony murder, rape and conspiracy to rape in a case considered among the worst atrocities by U.S. military personnel in Iraq. In his plea agreement, he said he conspired with three other soldiers from the Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne Division to rape 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi.
F*cking shame on your country, this is what happens when you send a army with no reason to start a war to a country thats vulnerable.

So he bloody well should. Although I don't blame it on the American governments choice to go to war - atrocities can happen during even the most honourable of conflicts.

A soldier is basically government issue. If you sign up for the military, they control you for 4 years or whatever the length of your contract is. I'll go look it up.. give me a minute.

GI stands for Government Issue. This reverts back to military law which says that all military personnel, like the bunks they sleep in, the clothes they wear, and the guns they carry, are the property of the Government. What started as a common joke among soldiers that they were, in fact, Government issued military property, became the standard ready reference. They were, quite simply, issued by the government and, therefore, Government Issue.I hope that answers it for you.

Thank you very much, its a question that has been in my mind for ages yet i never though about looking it up.
I think GI means General Infantry, mainforce of U.S army but whatever.
I don't understand the way of American court giving an rapist a life imprisonment of 100 years.

You get a certain number of years for each crime, so there for they murdered a whole family and raped a girl = 100 years and most probably at the end of the 100 years and he's still alive he would be put on death sentence.

He should just be sentenced to death. It's wasting taxpayers' dollars to feed him and give him a home until he dies anyway.
Normally I support our troops. Not in this case.
It's just a shame that you don't hear about the good that the soldiers do. I have pictures that my friend sent from Iraq where they are handing out bottled water, food, medical supplies, and even kicking a soccer ball with some kids. You never hear about that stuff, only the scumbag degenerate F&^%-ups who are doing wrong over there.
And to be honest, he won't get the death sentance after his 100 years (if he were to live that long) because that would technically be two sentances for one trial, and they don't do that. Sometimes they'll only try a person on some counts, so if they don't get the sentence they want or he's found innocent, they'll try him for the other stuff. Just wanted to shed some light.
However you look at it, he's a scumbag and makes the hard working REAL soldier's look like crap. And they are generally good, strong, caring people, who do they're job as professionally as anybody.

Personally Sentenced to death doesn't make a difference whereas life imprisonment is more torture mentally rather than physically it'll get it into his thick empty head everything he done was wrong, as well if he does survive the 100 years which i strongly doubt he would be put to death.

True, but he lives with the hope of parole in ten years. I think once he starts his sentence they should tell him "We made a mistake. You won't ever get paroled. Sorry, have a nice life. Meet your cell mate, his name is Bubba, and he likes young bad soldiers like yourself."

Wasn't Bubba from Forrest Gump? Lol. And i highly doubt they would let him out on parole, your countries justice system is much harsher than ours, this guy got murdered over here, the culprit got 11 years, a woman threathened to stab a teacher with scissors she got 16, the murdere got out only after 7 years to kill again. Stupid, so i highly doubt he would get out if so he would have a hard time finding a job and a new family.

I also think he'll probably be out on parole. our country does that sort of thing too, its ****ing stupid, i hope they make him stay there the entire 100 years
