too many people post on "how can i raw this"

so here it is:

there are two was to do this:

1
what you need:
1. paint stripper
2.sandpaper (it would be good to have both 600 and 1000 grit)
3. steel wool (really fine grit)
4. latex gloves(a good idea because paint stripper burns your skin)
5. a paint brush
6. clear coat paint

steps:
1. use paint brush to aply paint stripper to the surface you want rawed
2. continue to aply a few thick coats of paint stripper
3. scrape off loose paint(using a paint stick or anyting else you can find)
4. repeat steps 1 and 2 untill the majority of the paint is gone(it is ok to have a couple small spots left)
5. use a garden hose to rinse off the paint stripper
6. use the sandpaper to get the reminance of the paint off(600 grit)
7. go over the whole frame with sand paper(1000 grit)
8. steel wool the whole frame/part to make it shine
9. clear coat the frame/part with multiple coats

(only use paint stripper on cement layered with newspaper or a junk piece of plywood)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

2

what you need:
1.some cash
2.clear coat paint
3. a local autobody/paint shop
steps:
1: go to a local autobody shop
2: ask them to sandblast or glass beadblast your frame/part and how much it will cost(make sure you have the frame /part you want rawed with you)
3: you can either clear coat your frame/part yourself, or have them do it.
4. pay them

also: if you can get all the paint off with out using sand paper, it may shine better after steel wool

what is clear coat paint? can you get an image? is it like krylon spray paint?

clear coat is a color of paint.

its just like red spray paint or house paint, except its CLEAR, you put it over your colored project.

almost every paint maker makes clearcoat.

for rawing you just need clearcoat, gloss, semi gloss or flat depending on the look you want.

painting you need a primer, a little lighter than the color your painting, then the color, then clearcoat.

if your painting black, get a light grey primer, or dark grey primer, dark color=dark primer, light color=white primer.

rawing is really simple, its just a matter of taking the paint off.

try not to use sand paper, as this will sand off the heattreating discoloration, odyssey forks have the heattreated steerer tube, if you sand it, it will go from a dark color to a mirror finish.

i usually raw mine and use a plastic scraper to scrape the paint off, then i use a bunch of old towels and rags to wipe all the goo off, then i find where paint chunks are still stuck on and spot those with stripper and rub them off, then after all the parts are stripped and good, i use a cleaner solvent to take the oils and goo off, so the paint will stick.

oh and where can i buy some paint stripper?

Beanie

depends what kind of hardware stores you have.

walmart sells them in the automotive section where the car paints are, and in the home paint section where house paints are.

we have a Napa store, they also have it, menards has it in he paint section, and so does arnold motorsupply=car accessories place, in the paints section.

just go to any hardware type store and look in the paint section where spraypaints and house paints are, you should find either a spray can of stripper, which is easiest to apply, or the stuff in a can, aircraft stripper works the best and fastest, but any stripper does the same job.

yeah im thinking of painting my frame a light purple like one of the flybikes pantera frame and paint my fork light gray. so i would need some white primer (which is a paint right?) for both, then some paint(light purple and gray), then some clearcoat (clearcoat is a type of like lacquer, right?). is that all i'll be needing?

if your painting the frame and forks, then yes youll need a white primer for both the frame and fork, then get the purple and grey, then a clearcoat, make sure all 3 of these spraypaint cans are from the same brand, otherwise you may run into peeling.

peeling is when you use diffrent brands, sometimes they react and the one brand will eat the other brand of paint and make the paint peel up and bubble right after you spray it on.

i reccomend duplicolor or krylon, both are great.

youll also need some sandpaper, if your painting the frame and fork a color, do NOT raw the parts, you wont need to prime them either, just get some 200grit sandpaper, 400grit, and 1000grit.

use the 200grit sandpaper and sand any scratched or chipped spots, then come back with 400grit over the 200grit scratched spots till its nice and smooth, then you can prime over those spots if you want to prime the whole frame.

then sand with 1000grit after each coat of light paint you spray, this will let the paint stick to its last coat the best.

I used an old bathtub a few months ago for stripping a few components. I managed to get a wholesale container of the stuff for cheap, left the components in there too sit for about 24hours, came out perfect. Still a few specs here and there but as stated above, can easily be removed. Nice guide.
And yeah, when you get your paint, get good quality stuff. You'll notice it in colour and in how well it takes the beating of the elemnts when your riding:lol:

No they keep it locked away becuase it's an aerosol, which in turn is flammable and dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced painter. It's not becuase of little ghetto kids, white boys are just as ****ing ghetto so quit the racism, hillbilly.

yes, if you are rawing a part, you need paint stripper. benie is talking about painting a part, wich this thread was not intended to be about.

i will make a thread about painting too soon, if there is not already one. to the search button i go....

Beanie

you do not need stripper, factory paint is the BEST primer there is if its near the color your painting.

just sand the factory paint lightly enough so that your primer sticks to it.

whenever i paint something, i use the factory paint as the basecoat for the primer to stick to.

also about the putting the bike in the tub and letting it sit for 24 hours is worthless, if you READ the instructions on the back of the stripper it says let it sit for 1-30 minutes.

i let mine sit on for 5 minutes and then take it off, depending on how many coats are on there. if you have 20 coats of paint then yes 30 minutes would be good.

White spirits work a spaint stripper and the clear coat is sometimes called clear laquer or similar.

sorry to bring back an old thread, but will sandblasting take the discoloration off of the welds and heat treatments?
