i was wondering.. around how fast should you go? do you bunny hop at the top of the jump or does the speed of the bike just launch you? im riding a diamondback venom (freestyle bike), but i upgraded the back brake to a linear and took off the front brake. how heavy should my bike be for this? should i invest in a new bike? sorry if i sound stupid, but i dont have anyone to teach me in real life. haha  thanks guys

I can tell you how fast to go because i dont know what jump your riding. Speed is normally common sense. If the jump is big then go fast and if it is small go slow. About jumping when you are comartable on the jumps how much you pull depends on steepness. If the jump is vertical it sends you high already but if it isnt very steep you can add hop y pulling up hard.

Practice makes perfect. Try smaller jumps at first, try jumping off stuff and landing with both wheels at the same time. Differnt jumps require different pump. Riding as much as you can is really the only way to get the feel.
Your bike should work fine for now. As you getter better and go bigger, you will want to upgrade though. But for now, work on smaller stuff that you and your bike can handle. Have fun!

About the bike. You have a good bike for a beginner. Once you are throwing big tricks you might want an upgrade. How much does it weigh if you know and what is your buld?(height, weight, fat or muscle?)

the bike should do ok for now just it depends on how big the jump is and how far the gap is and if your going down hill or what you should know how fast to go though.

the bike weighs 36 pounds approximately. I am 140 pounds 5'7 and more muscle than fat lol

Well I think that will be ok for now but i would either buy lighter parts or a lighter bike...in the future because it willhelp your dirt jumping.

as most dirt riders will find theres a comfortable jumping speed coming up to the jumps, try that if it's an average jump but if it's huge makesure you have a huge sproket or you wont be going very far, 44 teeth i find is great for dirt riding

Its not the sprocket size that would matter in that case. Its the gear ratio.

^^^^^^^^^ yeah thats what i meant, lol it's 1:10am in aus, not thinkin 2 brightly but yer 44-17 is a great ratio for dirt

Isn't the average recommended gear ratio 2.75 or something?
17:44 is wait... erm... around 2.6.
If I were you I'd get a 16t freewheel :D

im looking at getting a new bike, i was thinking of slightly taller gearing but you cant really tell the diffrence

I could tell the difference between a 36t and a 39t. Thats hardly a change at all but it was still noticable.

yer well it all depends on the bike and the crank but yer it is noticible but in my case very slightly, i just cba pullin the cassette and back rim apart to make a slight change lol

ok what im suggesting is you start out with a decent slop u want like a box jump but give it a curve like a quarter pipe and a lip make sure its nice and backed down best test is to roll up to the very top and roll back and do it a few times making sure the sides are solid too.....you can add a landing or just make it shoot you then spot that and give yourslef like 2 ft behind where u landed so if u dont hit it perfect you dont die and flat out on the top as you progress make it steeper last year i was hitting a 3ft box jump at first the i carved a good 2 ft into the ground cuz i ran out of places to dig dirt so i started with 3 ft with a pretty mellow kick to a jump that shot you a good 3 feet air and it was a good 5 foot gap even tho it was a table just progress and whn you get confident start digging out the middle to make it bigger and soon you will have a huge jump but always remember the higher you make the jump the farther you go so your going to be doing a lot of spreading out and adding to the landing when u get one
as for jumping at first your gonna want to hop theres a good chance your going to moto whip out because if being a beginner and not haveing complete control as you go into the air and like everyone said the steeper the less pull u need but always remember that you do need to do a small front pull dirt jumping is more about control of your bike in the air and less of strenght if u build the jump right you just need to like pop up off the lip and level out and when you start to fall you need to push down the bike so you levekl out with the landing but you dont have steep landings until you are experienced make it mellow and long at first
