View Full Version : [HowTo] Double Front Brakes

Here we go! I was asked about having 2 levers for my front brakes, and i like to write things.

What you will need is this: you will need 1 length of inner wire, about 65 inches or there abouts. 1 knarp (or lucky bolt or whatever). 2 of those 2 into one gyro slug things. 4 lengths of cable housing, 2 about the length of an upper gyro cable,. and 2 a bit longer than a lower one. 1 set of brakes (derr) and 2 brake levers:

Now, you start like this. remove the cable from the housing. put the little lug thing into one of the brake levers, i use the right one. Push one of the smaller cable housings up to the barrel adjuster. after this, push one of the slugs up, with the 2 holed bit facing upwards. i cut mine a bit so it was more out of the way.

Now, I like to remove the top bolt here, for ease. so take the top bolt out and push it up the cable so it nestles up again the slug. obviously, have it threads facing down, put the little cap thing on after this (the thing that tightens down on the stem) and now thread the cable through the star nut.

Push the cable all the way through the fork till it comes down and pokes the tire. pull it out to one side. now you put on the other 2 into one slug, no need to cut it down, but this time put it facing the other way around. push one of the longer cables on now. pull it tight up against the lug, but DO NOT push the slug up the steer tube. now you put on any hardware that you need to attach the cable to your brakes, like a brake stop or whatever, I'm using v brakes so its really easy. you probably don't need to set it all up yet, just all the hard work but leave it so you can still adjust it. put the other long cable over the wire and push it up against the slug. now this is the annoyingly tedious part. you have to get the open end of the inner wire up through the star nut. this normally takes me about 10 minutes of swearing and kicking stuff. so go slow. this is what you want it to look like inside your steerer tube:

Once the cable is back through the top, looking like this:

Put the knarp on that bitch, quick! ive spent ages getting it through the star nut many times, only to go get the cable and have it slide back down.

Once you've got it, put the last piece of housing over the cable, and pull it real tight. doing this you may have to make sure that the actual cable bits on the brake are completely loosened, so the housing is touching itself. once you've got the housing on, put the damn knarp back on!
the top bit will look like this now:

Loosen the knarp and move it to the very end of the cable. now i know this is a shitty photo but its the best i have

pull the lever right out, and push the knarp into it. pull the cable through the lever as per normal, and hook your brakes up.give them a bit of a squeze.

Then tighten them up, unhook one of the housings onto the brake. pull the cable back out of the lever. loosen the knarp.DO IT GRADUALLY. if you cut off too much you will need to buy new cable and do it all again! so do it in small bits. so move the knarp down about a centimetre, cut off the excess and put it back in the lever. rehook the brakes up and test them out. keep doing this until you find it how you want it. remember to tighten the knarp mega hard, cause its gonna have a fair bit of pull n it. pics time:

Impressive. When you get around to it, take a picture of the frontal view of the brake levers so I can get a better look at how you thread the wires to the front brake.

Can this get stickied in the flatland section? Its a pretty new concept, I've never seen anything like it.

i got an exam in 20 mins, but ill get a pic soon. 2 dont go into one. the 2 into one slugs are used as cable stops. 2 wires with housing cant go through the stem bolt, so you need to use the slugs to stop the housing so its stil tight.

Its wierd, why do you need to front brakes ?
Isnt one enough and wudnt that just way the bike down ?

kkmk
01-23-2007, 05:07 AM
for flatland. imagine spinning around super fast, chucking in a barflip, then needing a brake to slow you down or to hift the weigh tof the bike but noo! with the bar flip you mover your brake lever to the other side. hence the double fronts. dude, cable weighs shit all, and a lever, meh. a single system of back brakes weighs pretty much equal..

PhoenixBMX

is it any more powerful?

Thanatos
01-23-2007, 07:15 AM
That's nuts. But a cool setup and a nice how to. I only understand about half of it though.

kkmk
01-23-2007, 09:43 AM
yeah its super difficult to understand. sorry bout that. umm, its pretty much just as powerful normally, but if you pull both at the same time its twice as powerful.

01-25-2007, 08:50 PM
so basiclaly if you push the left lever, the left brake pad will hit and vise versa?

kkmk
01-26-2007, 02:57 AM
no. no. no. you pull the right lever, both arms will come on. you pull the left lever, both arms will come on. its that easy. pulling them both levers means boit arms will come on twice as hard, because twice as much cable is being taken up.

people are retarded i have no idea about flatland but i can still understand the concept and use for this, most flatlanders dont use back brakes so it wouldnt really effect the weight on their bike at all

rmilloy

So how does pulling 2 levers instead of one help u when doing flatland ?

Edit : Nevermind i just had a quick read and understand it now.

Paul Osicka use to do a set-up like this using two Tech-77 levers dual cabled into one with a Primo Pervert, and I think he used a Nippon U-brake though not 990's

more photos needed - especially of the parts around the forks and actual brakes! sounds weird & complicated so i wanna get my head around it just for knowledge's sake!! :)
