A spoke mod is a modifacation done which changes a regular cable hanger with spokes that run from your cable hanger into your brake arms which enhances your slowing down experience, and gives your brakes a much more positive feel. This takes alot of work, and alot of getting things perfect. Before trying this, make sure that you can set up regular brakes properly, so they work good, and that you have commen sence, and that you do not get frusterated easily. If you do this, and **** up your brakes, and they never work again, don't come crying to me. With that said, good luck.
1) Cut the head of the spoke off. Bend the spoke like picture 1 shows.
2) Put both spokes through the side holes, and down the bottom hole of your hanger. (If using a different hanger, you will have to find a different way to keep the spokes in place. One idea is to drill a hole in it, and let the spoke heads stop it from going all the way through). This may take some time, and different bending teqniches.
3) push the inner cable through the hole where it is supposed to go. Clamp it down. It doesn't matter where it is clamped down, just so it is close enough to the brake arms for the spokes to go through.
4) run one spoke down and into the clamp on the brake arm. Clamp it down however far you want your brake pads from your rim. If your spoke does not fit through this hole (most likely it will) try making the spoke a little bit thinner using sand paper or something like that.
5) This is probably the most tricky part of them all. Clamp the other spoke down so that it is the exact same distance as the other pad. Make sure Both spring tensions are the same, and that both pads hit the rim at exactly the same time. Your doing this spoke mod for exceptional braking, don't skip out on this step. Keep trying and trying untill you get it right.
Note: When clamping the spoke , make sure it is not bent at all, and it is clamped in the way it wants to be, because if this is not done, it will not line up with the cable right, and it will feel like your old loose hanger again.
Note:You will have to cut the spoke many times to get it the right length. If it is too long, it will hit the other arm after going through the arm, totally killing brake effencincy (see figure 2 for proper length).
