A spoke mod is a modifacation done which changes a regular cable hanger with spokes that run from your cable hanger into your brake arms which enhances your slowing down experience, and gives your brakes a much more positive feel. This takes alot of work, and alot of getting things perfect. Before trying this, make sure that you can set up regular brakes properly, so they work good, and that you have commen sence, and that you do not get frusterated easily. If you do this, and **** up your brakes, and they never work again, don't come crying to me. With that said, good luck.

1) Cut the head of the spoke off. Bend the spoke like picture 1 shows.
2) Put both spokes through the side holes, and down the bottom hole of your hanger. (If using a different hanger, you will have to find a different way to keep the spokes in place. One idea is to drill a hole in it, and let the spoke heads stop it from going all the way through). This may take some time, and different bending teqniches.
3) push the inner cable through the hole where it is supposed to go. Clamp it down. It doesn't matter where it is clamped down, just so it is close enough to the brake arms for the spokes to go through.
4) run one spoke down and into the clamp on the brake arm. Clamp it down however far you want your brake pads from your rim. If your spoke does not fit through this hole (most likely it will) try making the spoke a little bit thinner using sand paper or something like that.
5) This is probably the most tricky part of them all. Clamp the other spoke down so that it is the exact same distance as the other pad. Make sure Both spring tensions are the same, and that both pads hit the rim at exactly the same time. Your doing this spoke mod for exceptional braking, don't skip out on this step. Keep trying and trying untill you get it right.

Note: When clamping the spoke , make sure it is not bent at all, and it is clamped in the way it wants to be, because if this is not done, it will not line up with the cable right, and it will feel like your old loose hanger again.

Note:You will have to cut the spoke many times to get it the right length. If it is too long, it will hit the other arm after going through the arm, totally killing brake effencincy (see figure 2 for proper length).

If you have any questions, I will be happy to help out. And if you want any more pictures of anything specifically, I'll hook you up.

Nice, I like it. But how exactly would it change the feel of the brakeing system? The metal wire you would use instead of the spokes is pulled tight by the brakes, which would make it feel solid just like the spokes you used. Sorry, it doesn't exactly make sense to me, but great work nonetheless.:)

this is like one of the best things u can do for ur brakes... u can keep ur springs really loose for an easy pull but but keep a really positive feel because there is no stradle cable slac i did this mod just today and i wish i would have seen this article earlier or though of it (its pretty amazing how much better it is)

This is one of the better tutorials out there for a spoke mod, most others i have seen are accompanied with blurred pictures that i feel are the most important of any how-to. I got a spoke mod set up quite sometime ago, yhou really have no idea how big a difference it makes until you get it so perfect you can do a fufanu with nothing more than your baby finger

Thanks for the compliments. It really does improve your breaking a ton. Pluss, I made this article like a month after doing the mod, and I havn't had to touch a thing on my brakes since.

The spoke doesn't slip??

No, the little insert thing with the bolts on the end of the arm that the spoke goes into (also the straddle cable if I was running one) has a little allen bolt that clamps the straddle cable (or spoke in this case) in place.

I do this as well, I just did it a different way
I use tektro brakes.
I used a cruiser spoke so i didnt have to cut anything
I put the spoke trhough the little hole threaded on the nipple all the way and tighten it down into place.
Then I bent it around to the other arm and left the end that attaches to the hub chillen there. then set up the cable hanger and cable normally.
What this does is it creates more tension, and takes away the flex of a normal straddle cable, which enables for better braking.

i did this with a coat hanger instead of a spoke as i didnt have a spare spoke. i did it over a year ago, and my brakes only just need some tweaking

You basicly replace the stradle cable with a spoke. Reread the How-To slowly. If you are still lost PM me or ASD.

TIP:

When you guys do a spoke mod. Prefit everything then use your hanger if you have say a Knight or EVOII hanger to get the right bend. If you have the old small cheap metal stradle hanger...use your seattube to get the good bend.

I did this on my old bike and it was SOOOOO much better because a spoke will not stretch.

Right.. I think i get it now..

So where i've put red coat hanger.. is that correct?
And where i've put the blue linear cable thats correct?

The hanger itself on my bike is just rounded so i'd be able to round the coat hanger no problem around that.. but putting it through one side of the brake would be difficult.. 'cos its got a little ball on the end and it clips in via that.. but the other side would be easy because its like a screw and it bolts down the cable.. which on mine is now frayed 'cos its shit. lol!

Right/\/\

But, you can get another bolt at a hardware store or off any bile with brakes(side pulls work too). And use the bolt that holds the cable on the other side seeing you have 1 set already.

Thanks v much +rep =) I'll run into my nearest dry-cleaners tomorrow and ask for a metal coat hanger 'cos i've just dropped my keys down a grate haha!
