As many of you know, it was the 1 year anniversary of hurricane kartina a few days ago. Since the hurricane thousands of people are still displaced and most of the low-income housing in New Orleans is still yet to be re-built by the city. What has been re-built has been turned into nice little condos for the tourists. Right now there are people that can't move home because the city has put locks on the doors and windows of their houses. Many of the locked up houses we never even touched by water and are scheduled to be demolished to build more condos for tourists. Not only was the US government unprepared in the days of the hurricane, they still have not taken action to rebuild the destruction.

I have family there and lived there for a little bit myself. The houses were locked up against looters. Why would it matter if the water touched the houses anyways? They wouldn't help against water damage. They are building condos, but the condos are to provide low-cost housing to displaced residents, not for tourists. Though there are some hotel-type buildings being built as well to promote tourism so that the city has money to continue the cleanup, because New Orleans is lacking money to clean up the city.
-Disclaimer-
This is all what I have heard through my family members which might not be entirely true, please don't get pissed if I'm wrong.

From what I heard the city won't unlock the houses for some reason and are apparently demolishing even the houses that don't have water damage. I read an article that said there were fancy houses being put up that the people trying to move back into their homes could never afford. I'll post a link.

I didn't have the time to read all of that - I will later -, but I did see how they brought racism into it, while the governer of New Orleans is black, and thats pretty funny.

I'll try and search around for different articles and see if they say the same thing and if theres anything else.

No I honestly want to read it, and I still do, but I honestly don't have time. This is the first five minutes I've taken on the site between school, work, riding, and taking care of my aunt. But work's done, school is now on a set schedule, and everything else is the same. But I'll take your word for it when you imply that the local and national government is ****ed. :?
