How To

Approach the ledge at a moderate speed.
Jump and swing your back tire so that it and your front peg land on the ledge.
Keep your weight centered and low toward the ledge.
Swing your back tire back into line with your front as you come off the ledge to complete the trick.
Feel awesome.[HowTo] Smith Grind Video (http://ugo.com/channels/sports/features/trickguide/default_lite.asp?id=11&gallery=trickguide&subdir=streetriding)

A couple of tips I'd like to offer:

- Landing the back wheel just before the front peg
- Keep your weight back towards the rear wheel
- Lift up the front wheel up a bit just before you hop off

-Smiths are a lot like manuals, your weight has to be completely over the back wheel or you're goin over the bars.

-The hop out is probably the hardest part of the trick(it was for me). If you're having trouble getting out. pop your weight sideways off the ledgeand turn your front wheel to pop your peg off.

same as me. i find that when you go to hopout do as if your on flat ground and hop like usual but shifting your weight to the side away from the ledge.

I allways had trouble to get my front peg on the ledge because i aimed my peg on the ledge and whip my back end on the ledge. but that didn't work for me.
so someone told me think to just bunnyhop on the ledge from the side, but aim your front wheel just off the ledge. if i think like that i get it.

my problem is getting into them but to get out i let me weigh move forward to lift the back wheel and kick it out first. then just pull the front up and off to level the bike out in the air to land. hope that made sense.

Yeah thats a good method to get on, get on the ledge as if you were going to bunnyhop onto it with both tires. Right before you land, keep the peg aimed for the ledge. Lean back alil to keep the weight centered. As your about to come off swing your back tire out and away from the ledge. Once your back tire starts falling off pull your front peg up and off the ledge.

just fully swing your ass in the direction you want to hop off the ledge while leaning forward a LITTLE bit like you're popping into a nose manual. don't lean too far...

I used to try and hop out of these and always landed nose heavy, so now I sort of keep it in tooth a bit when coming out, swing my back out and then pop the front off... It works really well and feels stylish...

IMO I think this how to is piss poor, even tho Nigel is the shzznit.

I think...

Getting on as you approach you need to pull up high enough as a feeble grind. Once up that high you simoteneousy (sp?) push the front down to get your front peg on which will lift your rear then you shift your hips towards the ledge. You actually can see Nigel doing this exact thing. The pushing down of the front end will automatically bring up your rear.

I think some mentioned to whip the rear on the ledge, just a simple light shift of your hips will get the rear on just at the ledge edge. When I was learning smiths I'd whip the rear and it'd get on way too much inside the ledge which looks ugly and can end ugly.

Getting off while learning is a slight hop away from the ledge. When you got the smith more comf I like to lean forward with all my weight on the peg to lift the rear off. Swing the rear out and pull my front peg off.

no offense but that way of getting off is ugly.

eh to each his/her own. I just think it adds style to the grind. The basic hopping off is boring and no style.

i find it funny at the bottom of the vids in the link it says this :

ha a how-to that expects you not to do the tricks

I'll have to try that lean forward and swing-off method of getting the rear off the ledge... usually I end up either faceplanting when I try and hop off (still in the leaned-forward position) or I slip the rear wheel off to a double peg and then hop the rest of the way.
And yes, whipping the rear over too far can result in a painful crash. I had that once where I simply got too sideways in the air, landed at a 70 degree angle and massively ate shit.
