Article from BMX-Zone.com, http://www.bmx-zone.com/en-article-id-148.html

I was reading a thread in the beginners section on bmx-forum, and found the typical arguement of haro's being worthless and so decided to point out a few of my own opinions.

Firstly, why is everyone's first reaction to swear and use abusive language in reply, defense or arguements with other members no matter how small the problem. After all we are talking about personil experience here and personil opinion which everyone is entitled, and for the most part everybodies opinion will be unique.

Secondly Haro and diamondback in my opinion are two two of the best starting companies, along with mongoose and hoffman. Dave Mirra used to ride for haro, im not saying just becuase a pro rides them makes them amazing, but I'm sure he contibuted somthing to haro, and no doubt tries to put somthing back into the sport through the company, after getting so much out of it himself. He can help haro with ride testing ect, and no doubt wants to give people the best start in the sport as possible.

Diamondback on the other i am somewhat more unfamiliar with, not knowing much of thier team but i would put money down on there being so good talent there. I personilly own a diamond back as my seond bx, came with a full 4130 frame and forks, along with 41thermal crank and civillian handlebars, all for £320 delivered, i dont see how people can argue with that being a fair deal.

Mongoose aswell, some of their completes come with cassette rear hubs, infact hazard casette's to be exact, along with 3-piece cranks and full 4130 parts.

Basically if you are saying that a particular company is worthless, going on the basis that the bikes may not be able to withstand a higher riding level then you are insane, which beginner minus the minority naturally talented are gonna need somthing to withstand forces on a vert ramp or a 7ft drop down 10 staires within thier first year? Bike companies provide beginner bikes to withstand the intial learning curve, at a low affordable price (which is also encourages more people to try out the sport...) whats so wrong with that?

Basically in the end bikes are always improving, and just because you may have had a bad experience with one previously doesn't give you any right to condemn the rest of them to the scrapheap.

For the beginners out there, i will soon be posting a rough guide to what you should look out for for your intiial bike, good points for bikes have been stated in previous articles but i have not yet seen or read one aimed directly at helping beginners.

Thank you, for once someone speaks up against this crap. But some bikes plain old suck, all the low end bikes made by the companies you mentioned. Fitbikes' whole range of completes suck. Hoffman bikes take some harsh shit, even the EL Disrupters will take an ass kicking. Considering beginners are sketchy as hell, I say that a good beginner bike needs the following: decent wheelset - doesn't have to be a cassete, three piece cranks that the 7 year old was awake while welding, and good brakes. I hate watching beginners take off their brakes and start pretending to be all hardcore because they are brakeless, it makes no sense. But then again, my first bike had no brakes - no mounts.

As a general rule if your new to bmx get a second hand bike... that way if you twat yourself severely, you won't lose too much money. i mean my first bmx 18 months a go was a Dk Cincinati bought for forty quid off a mate... had it until july when it was stolen...

I have a GT/Dyno that I bought off ebay. It has GT mags and dont know if its a good begginer bike and if the mags can take the abuse of jumping off stairs and jumps.

I prefer my old joker frame too. The geometry on it was perfect, I could hop almost 3 feet with it, now I can't get above two. I ended up Bending my dropout though....

eeww. shit advice, beginners get screwed over easily bcos they dont know as much as the seller, and second hand bikes need some maintinence and upkeep which beginners cant do, but u got a good deal on the dk ;)

For the most part, I agree with you. Some of those so called 'crap' companies you mentioned can make quite reasonable starting bikes. A lot of people see that others say "Dont get a $100 dollar haro they suck", so they go and pass this advice to more beginners, which really isnt needed. BUT, beginners do need the advice on what they are getting into. Anybody, regardless of the fact if they've ever even sat on a BMX, knows that in general you get what you pay for. When people always tell them the bikes they like suck, generally they get compared to much higher professional level bikes. On the other hand some people do actually have a solid reason for saying why the bike in question is not worth the money, and may offer a better alternative for the price. And another thing, when people say bikes suck sometimes they are right, sure it might be a 4130 chromoly frame and 3 piece cranks, but the QUALITY of the products varies greatly. You will be surprised on what some beginners can accidentally do to damage their bikes, so this too results in being told that their bike is stink. And I have no idea what I just said. Im sure you can scramble something out of that.

go with the Wrap before the Getaway. the Getaway isnt full-chromo. or, id go with the six-pack. better rims than the Wrap.

Dude, nice rant the same could go for music "just cause a couple bands suck dosnt mean they all suck"

the lower end dk's and wtp, and easterns SUCK the intergral slauson sucks, its not even full cromo, yeah people respect them because of the belair, you cant base your opinions on one experience, we'd have shorter lifespans if you could, and its honestly whats inside that counts (inside the metal)...choose your bike wisely on whats inside not what the decal looks like.

ps im not gonna let you get away with not getting flamed "it's perswonal not personil. your from the uk you people invented english, get an oxfird dictionary".

I own a haro backtrail and personally it has been my favorite bike. Ive ridden some top notch bikes and i even own a cannondale gemeni 900 which cost me a whopping $2000 but the haro just feels the best. But the brakes that came with ir are pieces of you-know-what. I never really use the brakes though...

Exactly. I like a lot of frames and I don't think that 1 single frame is bad...if they were bad then they wouldnt still be producing them...haha. I love haro too.

F%$#%$# first of all i dont $#@ abuse people. secondly its PersonAl preference(your from the UK where english started, no? im telling the queen of england). thirdly. GT's imo are better than diamondbacks (for street anyway- and thats just what i rode when i was a kid)and hoffmans i just dont like for no reason other than the fact that im too cool for hoffman. fourthly even NORCO has a decent bike out there that comes with better parts and geo than my dk sixpack, afte rupgrading and tuning my bike to my preference i love it again so. F%$# what you herd do your research, check the specs and ride what you ride. cuz afterall its not about what you ride where you ride how you ride or who you ride with... its WHY...... IRDE for me

I haven't had a problem with my aluminum frame yet? Lightest bike I've ever set foot on. I'm guessing it's 23-25lbs stock?

And guess what, it's made by DiamondBack. Only problem I've had was bending the rear rim a tad bit. Just screwing around :)

There are LOTS of kids living in towns here in the USA that have NO BIKE SHOPS. Their ONLY option is a Walmart/Toys-r-US bike.

If you happen to be one of those kids, it's OK to ride whatever you can. I know it sux cause teenagers can be so pressured to have a 'real' bike by other kids, but JUST ride. Trust me, if you learn to rip it up, and learn to jump and do big stuff on your bike, you will be considered just as hard core as any other kid........

Beside, when you get a bit older, start working and buying NICE bike stuff...you'll appreciate it much more. LOTS of 'old schoolers' like myself can attest to that.
