right, am getting a custom cpu soonish(1gb ram, 200gb harddrive sort of thing)
so, it comes with a AMD 64 Bit 3000+ Processor. now will that be good enough to play games with, or would it be in my total best intrest to save a bit more and get a pentium 4 prosessor?

How many GHZ? Ghz and Ram are what you need for games.. Also a good graphics card and an audio card. :)

if AMD runs too hot then get another fan or better heatsink fan or just open your case and run a room fan on it. leave your window open slightly at night and close it during the day, keep that room cooler than other rooms.

A good gaming PC revolves around ONE specific item. Your video card. THE most important item in the PC. Spend your money on that.
I just built two Gaming PCs at the house, and while AMD is a close second....I would still recommend a P4 processor. Make sure the Motherboard has HT technology, and supports dual channel memory. If you really want to make sure you get it all.....get a motherboard with the new PCI express slot for your graphics card.
I am running a Radeon 850 Pro on a PCI express slot.
Video card, video card, video card.

P4 with HT is much much better than AMD. But yeah trimix is right. Get a good video card. Good RAM helps to.

MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130468
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103536
sexy with all the other shit it all depends at the time of purchase wheter i have the cash to go with a 2.0
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103535
but i'm a geek and my rig will be titties...
O, and i almost forgot... P4's are schit amd's don't overheat and are EASILY the best for gaming... just learn how to properly cool your pc and overclock for that extra bang. but even without OC they're better than P4's

Meh,
i was just trying to point out how the processing capabilities of the AMD are superior to those of the P4, intel is simply behind the times when it comes to processors for optimum proformence... lol...
