I have taken the cranks off and turning the axle by hand it feels like it is catching and does not turn smothly? Is this normal? I would have thought that the sealed bearings would run smoothly.
Thanks for your help.

i had the same problem with mine.basically it means they are screwed....like if i feel like it is grating or ''clicking'' or anythin that does not feel even or smooth just means they are blown pretty much.and from what i have heard spanish go pretty quick so it more than likely is the problem.

Does that mean that I just need to replace the bearings?

Yep! Don't chuck the bearings though, hang on to them and drop over to a local bearing shop and they can match them up with probably a much better bearing and you will probably pay less for them than buying them from a Bike Shop. However make sure they are a double sealed bearing ( seals on both sides of the bearing, not single sealed and not sheilds which will allow in moisture).

that's very true.

while there are some high quality bike bearings out there, you usually pay top dollar for them.

now, it's n ot worth driving all over hell to find them, but if something is close, it's worth checking out

Don't buy from a bike store...
I bought my spanish bearings for 5 bucks each from a bearing supplier.

Just take it in and they will match it up

Agree, bearing supplier = mass stock = low price. LBSs, etc have to make some sort of profit, where as a supplier is directly linked with manufacturer and so buys in bulk and uber cheap!
