I have a shop www.jtbikes.com and a team Animal Racing and it seems that everyone on my team wants to get something different out of a sponsor. some want entry fees, some want parts, some want a jersey, and some just want to be part of a team.
So I pose this question.

Realistically, what shoud a sponsor be doing for a rider?

i don't think you should be paying for parts. they should be riding mainly for fun, and having to spend money on parts is just a small downside everyone deals with. jerseys are definately a good idea, because it makes the riders feel more part of a team and it's good advertising for you. entry fees... that's a hard one, my sponsor doesn't pay for entry fees, and i did actually miss a race once because i couldn't afford it, but i reckon it's completely up to you if you choose to pay for entry fees because it can turn out expensive. the riders have to look at it from both sides

if you need more riders, i'd be more then willing to fly your colors around minnesota and north dakota, and what ever nationals i can afford to go to this year.

realistically - it should be what the rider can do and should be doing for the sponsor NOT what the sponsor can do for the rider. the riders should consider gear, parts and accessories as a bonus for what they are already doing for the sponsor.

but what i would want in a sponsor is to pay entry fees for nationals and such

What are your goals for the team? What kind of exposure are you looking for, regional or national? It always comes down to one thing. Money, how much of it do you want to spend, and what kind of riders do you want to spend it on.

Obviously you want your team name on a jersey, that's a given. A lot of bike shops run a specific brand frame or bike. I would ask other team leaders questions about thier specific deals with their riders.

Just starting out I would offer my better riders a jersey, dicounted bike parts, and free labor on bike work.

Just my $.02
