Should I go clipless? Does it really make you faster? Is it easy to unclip? And finally, what are some good affordable ones?

For racing??? Maybe... (I don't race) But for anything else I really don't recommend it. Will completely limit your tricks, and I've never seen a BMXer with clipless perdals 8O .

For racing it helps even out the muscles you use for it. You know cuz know you have a good upswing with both legs. But beware of using them for street, because even the best of them can bind when you really wanna get off. I have a mtb that I actually fell over in a parking lot messing around cuz of this.

I'm thinking of getting some wellgos since they are really cheap and have some good reviews.

no. clipless is where the part of the pedal clips into your special shoe.

I have heard alot of good stuff about time clipless. If I go clipless on my downhill I would get time. They are supposedly much much easier to get into than shimono SPD style clips, you do not come out fo them on accident as much, and they are easier to get out of when you want to.

if you get clips.. get shimono 424 pedals. i got them and they kick ass.

Definately get them, and because you're posting here I'm guessing that you're over 8 - the minimum age to race with them.

If you are going to try them go with the Shimano 454 they are inexpensive and reliable not to mention they have a platform just in case you come unclipped. Time are nice but a little on the pricy side if you do go with the Time. be sure to put the Right cleat on the Left Shoe and the Left cleat on the Right Shoe. This will give you 13 degrees more turn sideways before you come unclipped. If you are at a track that is often muddy definately go with the Time because the mud don't matter! The egg beaters are rarely used in racing because they have no platform in case you come unclipped. also they have very little tolerance from left to right and you come unclipped very easily.
Also remember not to just jump out on the track with them. practice on your street with them first, because the first time you stop you will not come unclipped in time to get your foot down, I PROMISE.
I hope I was able to help.

time is the way to go because they are self cleaning and can come with platforms...yes they are expensive but it will be worth it because u will not have to worry about claening everytime u get on the gate
