View Full Version : [Review] Macneil Ti Pegs

OK, I'll admit to getting Ti pegs for one reason: they spark when you grind. Granted, this is a fairly shallow reason, but it's the same reason I have glow in the dark pedals and tirefly's: it looks cool when you ride at night, which is when a good chunk of my riding occurs. The pegs look nice, and they're fairly light, but to be honest I didn't notice much of a difference. They weigh less than my J-pegs, but I couldn't feel it. When grinding I found the pegs to slide somewhat better on cement than steel pegs, which is a result of the metal being a bit softer. They really fly on steel coping, and give a great slide. When grinding cement, they throw off a ton of sparks, if you do a long double peg on a ledge, it may almost appear it is the Fourth of July (A bizarre American holdiay where people light off explosives in their back yards, for the rest of the world). While I love this, the sparks are obviously the metal of the peg wearing away, which brings me to the huge shortcoming of these pegs:durability. After a month of street riding, I wore a hole all the way through the peg, and had to flip it. At the end of the second month, the pegs were done. Just for comparison, I usually go through two sets of Jpeg's a year. Someone told me that Ti Pegs are just for ramp riding, and while that may be true, they're being marketed to street riders in ads, and nowhere on the packaging did it say 'For Ramp Use Only'. My final verdict: Avoid. These pegs are way too expensive to wear out this quickly. They are basically a rip off, and Ti is an inappropriate metal for pegs. My only exception would be if you only ride ramps, then these might be a good part to have. They slide a bit better than steel pegs, but hey, you can just ride faster. Comparing the very high price (5x what steel pegs cost), the negligible weight difference and poor durability, I would say steer clear of all Ti pegs.

good review. i plan on picking up a set to get rid of my heavy steel's. 95 percent of my grinding and stalls are on ramps, so they look like a good purchase for me.

Pretty cool man! For my bike I got now my uncle is buying me a set of the ti pegs for when I ride street at nighttime which is pretty cool. I'd only use them though when I have some people taking video's or pictures of me grinding ledges at nighttime :) Thanks for the review!

acctualy it sais on either the website or in their catalog (or maby tenpack sais it). but they do say that the pegs are not for street riding. for park riding only. the macneil light pegs are and hold up much better as they are recomended for both street and park. i have the lites and i am impressed.

yeah I suppose when they are marketting them to street riders it for handrails etc, but it still sucks that you wore them down so fast. Over here they would cost about £80! ($160!) so for that price you would expect them to last. You can however get cheaper ti pegs from 414 which are £45, not sure about the quality though.
I thought the macneil ti pegs came with a guarantee, they should for the price!

Pretty much exactly what I expcted to happen with the pegs, happened - they wore out in no time. They should come with a disclaimer in the package saying not to ride street with them, which is my point, if you look on the web you'll know, but if you go into your local bike shop, they may not, depending on their knowledge of BMX. I'm not pissed because I paid wholesale, so, no big loss.

then again emily. there is such a thing as common sence. titanium melts away like aluminum when it comes to stuff like concrete. its not resistant enugh no to. 9i dont mean melt as in tempature but in simple grinding away. the only way ti pegs could compete with cromo is if they made them nearly twice as think and even then there would be problems. you work with metal all the time dont ya? could you not of forseen this?

how much did you get them for?

Street, that's what I was saying, I knew it was going to happen, I just wanted to see how quickly, almost as an experiment. I know this, but most kids who BMX have no idea about metals and how they work, so I just think Macneil should put a piece of paper in the bag that explains about Ti and how quickly it will wear out street riding, because I think Macneil is a great company. $39.00 Us wholsale.

if you can get them that cheap, next time you're in England bring over a few, you prob be able to sell them for at least £45 a pair

Yeah, but that would be against the rules. The mark-up on bike stuff is insane, usually 40% or more, but it's the only way a shop can stay in business.

40% whoa thats insane! If Id known that I would have got friendly with Ian Morris by now, seeing as the biggest bmx distributor in the country is owned by him and is about 1 mile from my house.

You should ask him for a job. Even if he pays you for sh*t, you'll end up better off with what you can save on parts. See if he'll let you look at 'Bike A Log', which is a computer program of every bike part available and how much it costs, You will be floored. Many of the 'pro' frames that retail for over $300 Us sell for $120 US wholesale.

theres no way he'll give me a job, all his jobs go to the real good riders Like Caleb Kilby(Metal & Blacken). Look at the seventies adverts in RideUK they have an 'employee of the month' ad, which is a pic of one of their staff riding.
Any idea where I could get 'Bike A Log'?

Here in the US you can get it for free from the National Bike Dealer's Association, I'm sure the Uk may have a similar organization. I could try to copy the CD for you and mail it overseas, if you promise not to rat me out.

there is alway setting up your own merchant account and deal direct with bike manufactuing companys. get blank or dummy end of stock frames and throw your own stamp or sticker on it.
