Does the 1979 F-150 have automatic locking HUbs? if it doesnt can you convert it somehow? I am kinda a noob to how 4wd works exactly.

It will have manual hubs. Also, you don't freaking want auto hubs. They're the dumbest option ever offered on any 4wd vehicle ever. Manual hubs are locked in till you decide they shouldn't be.

Yeah they are manual hubs...my dad has a 78 that I almost rebuilt with him for my first rig..

Any older stock truck will be a manual.
Like Trike said, you don't want auto lockers. If your in the mood for aftermarket locks, go air. Once you go air, you won't go back. They saved me so much when wheeling.

so, you can just leave the hubs locked when driving down the road? or do they have to be unlocked?

locked = offroading
unlocked = on paved road

If you want bad gas mileage, then leave them locked.
If you want normal gas mileage, unlock em.
Don't matter on road besides that. More wear on drivetrain also.

so if the hubs are locked the axles are spining and the front drive shaft, and the one side of the transfer case. And then when theer unlocked nothing is spinning but the wheels?
