The Review - By Josh aged: 7
Well around july time i decided it was time to purchase a new back wheel. that has held up really well. i also decided to buy a new freewheel for this new back wheel. I was told the shimano would be of excellent quality and was assured it would last a long time because :
it's what the trials riders use
needless to say i was happy with my new back wheel and was happy with the, what i thought was, reasonably priced freewheel.
I rode this freewheel as my biking skills improved and it never really took any big bails. it did have my body mass on it from 6 foot high ledges but that was what to be expected for it. after all:
it's what the trials riders use
in the time of october I was still happy with my backwheel. the freewheel had no problems whatsoever.
then on the 9th of october, something dreadful happened.
I was knocked into by a skateboarder, fell off my bike at a funny angle and ended up dislocating my ankle and breaking my leg in more than one place.
so i was out in hospital for the next two weeks, had an operation to correct the fractures and had some plates/bolts put in (10 bolts and 1 plate to be exact)...
so i had a heffer cast on for two weeks after that, then for the 4 weeks after i had a removable cast. which enabled my ankle to get better.
whilst all of this was going on, i was constantly fixing my bike as i had not much else to do. one of the things i did was take my back wheel apart and re-lace it. as far as i know i didn't do anything to effect the freewheel except clean it with cleaning stuff. and i didn't clean the inside of it or take it apart.
I recently (yesterday -wednesday) started to ride my bike again. and when i was crossing a road i pushed down too hard. heard a clunk and fell. this wasn't good for my confidence considering i had just had my cast removed totally and had been walking a lot during the day. and if i do say so myself i fuct my ankle up a bit more.
so i thought nothing of it. thought the chain had just come off. had a look and the chain was still on. so this befuddled me and i came to the conclusion it was just my chain slipping on and then off. but it happened again and that was when i got suspicious. i decided to ask people on here why it would do such a thing. but no one replied anything helpful (as usual) they just told me to buy a cassette hub. like i have £70 lying around eh?)
so i decided to take a look at my back wheel and check everything was okay. i took some of the tension off of my back wheel so it was easier to spin around and that.
i thought this solved the problem because i took the bike out for a spin and encountered no problems. but when i went to ride it today (thursday) it started doing the same things again. so i decided it must be the freewheel giving in to pressure. which isn't exactly what makes a reliable freewheel. especially when you haven't used it for so long and want to get speed.
so i decided to get a new free wheel, a diamond back one as it was the cheapest. this new freewheel has held up well even though it has only travelled 3 miles.
lots of love
